UCLG-MEWA Committee on Cooperation Development and City Diplomacy
In a global world where competition between territories is increasing Local Governments are to play a greater role than ever. With growing competencies in the fields of Economic Development, Culture Management and Research and Development, Local Governments have become key actors to strengthen the attractively of their city. UCLG-MEWA Committee on Cooperation Development and City Diplomacy provide UCLG-MEWA members a platform to share their experience in these fields.
Being the closest level of governance to citizens, Local Governments are well positioned to adopt the most adapted policies to their needs and therefore increase Democracy within International Relations. UCLG-MEWA Committee on Cooperation Development and City Diplomacy promote Local Democracy as a rampart against violence and tool for development.
Following its role to be the united voice of Local Governments in the international arena UCLG-MEWA made its main mission to localize the New Development Agenda adopted by the United Nations in 2016. In this regard the Committee on Cooperation Development and City Diplomacy is particularly interested in the localization of the Sustainable Developments Goals 11, 16 and 17, respectively related to Sustainable Cities, Peace, Justice, Strong Institutions, and Partnerships.
The Committee is also in charge of supporting UCLG-MEWA reflection on the importance of Local Governments in international debates on development such as the Policy Forum on Development, and the Civil Society Forum of Neighbourhood South, respectively related to DG DECVO and DG NEAR of the European Commission.
