Why UCLG-MEWA established the Committee on Environment?

UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment was established by the decision taken at UCLG-MEWA Executive Bureau and Council Joint Meeting held in Adana, Turkey on 19 December 2014.

This Committee, operates the works of local governments which are the main actors in the fight against environment problems in order to make them more active in this field and contribute to the solution, thus; mobilizes these institutions which have vital importance with regards to the future of the cities and societies.

As one of the 8 sections of UCLG World Organization, we adopt every headline in UCLG agenda as our priorities and we announce that we will operate the advocacy in global level for the interest of the local and regional governments in MEWA region.

In this regard, we have set the topics of climate change, renewable energy, urban agriculture areas, sustainable waste management and pollution (land, water, air, noise) as our major discussion topics of the local governments in the region.

Compact of Mayors, which is one of the most important initiatives of local authorities related to climate change issue, is an agreement by city networks and their members to undertake a transparent and supportive approach to reduce city-level emissions, to reduce vulnerability and to enhance resilience to climate change, in a consistent and complementary manner to national level climate protection efforts.

We are taking on the task of advocacy related to this agreement and working on its promotion, and we are working on our local and regional authorities’ climate related contributions to find a place in international arena through their commitments.

We are supporting many events on water and transportation, sharing them with our members, and with their participation in these events we are developing our relations for their maximum gains.

Through this new platform, we ensure the information and experience exchange between local governments and other relevant actors by carrying out cooperation activities.

Committee’s first meeting in which we follow up our activities and ensure coordination, took place in Malatya, Turkey on 13 November 2015, upon the request of Malatya Metropolitan Municipality.
