SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AND CLIMATE ACTION PLAN TRAINING TOOK PLACE ON FEBRUARY 16
The Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) training was held by UCLG-MEWA and EU4 Energy Transition on February 16 in Kocaeli, Türkiye.
The training aims to increase the technical capacities of local governments for climate action and to ensure the sharing of knowledge and experience between municipalities regarding the process of preparing a basic emission inventory and creating a climate action plan.
UCLG-MEWA Secretary General, Mehmet Duman, underlined that it would not be possible for Turkey, which ratified the Paris Agreement, to reach its net zero emission target until 2053, which was stated in the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution, without the participation and effort of local government representatives.
The training was carried out in cooperation with UCLG-MEWA and “EU4 Energy Transition: Covenant of Mayors in the Western Balkans and Turkey Project”, within the scope of the Global-Regional Coordination Project initiated by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), and the World Secretariats of Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) to strengthen climate action coordination at the local level.
The training was provided by the experts in their fields, and municipalities share their experiences. Hasan Sarı, Environmental Protection and Control Manager in Bağcılar Municipality (a GCoM signatory municipality) shared the Climate Action Plan process. Technical representatives from 15 different municipalities participated, and Zoom was used to address various stakeholders.
The SECAP training was carried out within the scope of GCoM and GRC Projects by the UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment under the umbrella of UCLG. The training has been instrumental in the development of the capacities of MEWA municipalities in terms of preparing sustainable energy and local climate plan by bringing experts and municipalities together in a hybrid format.
