UCLG RETREAT ‘22 WAS HELD ON FEBRUARY 21-25
The UCLG Retreat, which UCLG has held since 2017 with its governing bodies, sections and, relevant stakeholders, was held in Barcelona in a hybrid format between February 21-25, 2022. It was aimed to develop actions in line with the work plan determined by the governing bodies of UCLG, while strengthening cooperation by bringing together the actors working with local governments at the same time.
At the Retreat attended by Mohamed Saadie, UCLG-MEWA President, Mehmet Duman, Secretary General, Salim Korkmaz, General Coordinator, Melis Şahin, Committees and Projects Coordinator, and Bükre Türksoy, Relations with International Organizations Coordinator from UCLG-MEWA, UCLG-MEWA shared its regional priorities with the participants while strengthening its cooperation with other sections, institutions, and stakeholders.
During the five-day Retreat, Mohamed Saadie, UCLG-MEWA President and President of Union of Dannieh Municipalities, emphasized the importance of municipalities in migration management, the contribution of SDGs, and the steps taken for these goals to human rights and democracy in his speeches.
Mehmet Duman, UCLG-MEWA Secretary General, informed the participants about the Global Task Force on Migration, established by the UCLG-MEWA Committee on Social Inclusion, and shared the details of the activities. Salim Korkmaz, General Coordinator, shared the processes of Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) prepared by Izmir Metropolitan, Karatay, and Sultanbeyli Municipalities with representatives of municipalities and NGOs from around the world at the Volunteer Subnational Review (VSR) Workshop, and exchanged ideas with the participants on VSR preparations.
Uğur İbrahim Altay, UCLG Co-President and Mayor of Konya, also attended the Retreat and stated that in times of crisis, citizens, and thus municipalities, are the most affected, and therefore the continuity of peace and democracy is crucial.
