INTERNATIONAL / GLOBAL AGENDAS
RELATIONS WITH INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
Within the context of following-up international agendas and international relations, some of the works of UCLG-MEWA are as follows;
- Conducting institutional relations with UCLG World Organization
- Following and managing the relations with the international partners, specifically the UN and the EU
- Informing members and other departments about the international agendas
- Steering the signing processes of cooperation protocols and memoranda of understanding for strengthening cooperation with other UCLG sections, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations

Sustainable Development Goals
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
Paris Climate Agreement
The Paris Agreement builds upon the Convention and for the first time brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with enhanced support to assist developing countries to do so. As such, it charts a new course in the global climate effort.
The Paris Agreement central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the agreement aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change.
To reach these ambitious goals, appropriate financial flows, a new technology framework, and an enhanced capacity-building framework will be put in place, thus supporting action by developing countries and the most vulnerable countries, in line with their own national objectives. The Agreement also provides for enhanced transparency of action and support through a more robust transparency framework.
New Urban Agenda
The New Urban Agenda was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in Quito, Ecuador, on 20 October 2016. It was endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly at its sixty-eighth plenary meeting of the seventy-first session on 23 December 2016.
The New Urban Agenda represents a shared vision for a better and more sustainable future. If well-planned and well-managed, urbanization can be a powerful tool for sustainable development for both developing and developed countries.
The New Urban Agenda has been translated to more than 30 languages, including the six United Nations official languages, as well as the most widely spoken languages in the world such as Hindi, Bengali, or Portuguese. These translations reach more than eighty percent of the world’s total population calculating the languages by the total number of speakers.
Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (Sendai Framework) is the roadmap for how we make our communities safer and more resilient. As the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda, it provides Member States with concrete actions to protect development gains from the risk of disaster.
The Sendai Framework works hand in hand with the other 2030 Agenda agreements, including The Paris Agreement on Climate Change, The Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, the New Urban Agenda, and ultimately the Sustainable Development Goals.
UNDRR has been tasked to support the implementation, follow-up and review of the Sendai Framework and coordinate action within the UN system around disaster risk reduction to make this happen.
