UCLG-MEWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT TALKS “HUMAN CAPITAL, QUALIFIED EDUCATION and DEVELOPMENT”

Organized with the aim of contributing to the awareness raising on the SDGs, UCLG-MEWA Local Government Talks continues at full speed. We hosted Prof. Dr. Talip Küçükcan this month within the 2030 Agenda.

The issue of education has a significant place within Agenda 2030 defined by the UN. In fact, Goal 4 on “Qualified Education” stands out as the target with the biggest multiplier effect on other goals. Education has a defining character on many issues including but not limited to eradicating poverty, achieving gender equality, increasing employment and reducing inequalities between different disadvantaged groups. Among these, Goal 4 is the target with the most decisive influence on Goal 8 on “Decent Work and Economic Growth”. Considering this background, the impact of these two goals on sustainable development was discussed in the talk titled “Qualified Education and Development”, which was organized on 21 March 2019, at the UCLG-MEWA General Secretariat.

Prominent with his works on sociology, Prof. Dr. Talip Küçükcan mostly focused on the role that education can play in qualified development. Stating that neither socio-cultural nor economic development can be achieved if we do not invest in human capital, Prof. Dr. Küçükcan underlined the importance of making use of an advantage of migration. He further stated that universities should focus on the development of qualified people, who can meet the needs of global changing. He also added that individuals equipped with these qualifications and treats will participate in the labor force more.

The talk, which was interactively concluded with the questions from the participants, ended with the presentation of a plaque to Mr. Küçükcan by Secretary-General Duman.
