UCLG-MEWA Committee on Smart Cities and Urban Mobility

According to OECD, %70 of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050. Due to the intense population increase experienced in cities, the services of the local governments may fail. The UCLG-MEWA Committee on Smart Cities and Urban Mobility generally adopts a citizen-centered approach using technology facilitation. They are smart cities that are sustainable, transparent and accountable, produce solutions, adopt innovative and value-creating principles and carry out their activities with a holistic approach of urban policy and services.

Current Situation and Challenges in the MEWA Region

When we look at the region in general, the difference in income level is reflected in the smart city applications of the local governments and the citizens using these applications. In addition, the fact of war in some countries of the MEWA region is a very important fact that keeps investors from investing in these countries. Besides, the problem of finding human and material resources for the planned investments is also a problem reflecting the fact of the region.

Policy of the UCLG-MEWA Committee on Smart Cities and Urban Mobility

The Smart Cities and Urban Mobility Committee adopts the Smart City Wheel classification developed by Boyd Cohen in order to follow a systematic method and methodology in its work. With the help of this classification, the needs of local administrations are manifested quite clearly. Two different approaches have been developed to manifest needs. The first is to develop solution-oriented actions, and the second is to propose transformative approaches and be the driving force in its implementation. As a requirement of the citizen-centered approach adopted as the UCLG-MEWA Smart Cities and Urban Mobility Committee, a permeable Smart Cities Service Model is adopted in the provision of urban services by moving away from the conventional service provider model.
